Important Things
Today Jim and Vicky McCoul from Brookfield NS visited Molly and I. We discussed important things. Things like our families,
our grandchildren, fishing, fly tying, hunting. We discussed our roles as grandparents and how we must give those little ones
an opportunity to learn and enjoy outdoor sports. As grandparents, we see them growing up so quickly. Time is short.
Without their participation, they will be deprived.
The precious activities we treasure will suffer, and as a consequence, so will wildlife resources and habitat. What a joy
we experience as families when we see our grandchildren appreciate the things we hold so dear.
McCoul Special
Jim’s favourite fly for fall fishing is his
McCoul Special, sporting red and orange, bright colours that charm Atlantic salmon in fall’s cold water as spawning
time approaches. Jim thinks red is the “trigger colour”, so red is the fly’s predominant colour, with a
little orange added for good measure.
Here are his specifications:
Thread: Black
Hook:
Mustad 36980 or Partridge Bartleet Supreme*, barbless, in sizes 2 – 1/0
Tail:
Red hackle fibres
Body:
Silver Diamond Braid built up to a cigar shape
Underwing: Orange Krystal Flash
Wing:
Orange calftail or bucktail
Hackle: Red hen hackle,
tied in as a collar and slanted rearward

*Note - Partridge of Reddich,
now owned by Mustad, has moved production to China and the Bartleet Supreme hook is no longer being made. Shame!
I've switched to another fine hook, the Daiichi 2060, which I prefer anyhow!
Please stay on the line …
