Glitter Bear - tied by Bill Carpan |
Last week we began to feel what
we call “fall weather”, a reminder that it’s time to start preparation for fall salmon fishing. Flies must
be tied, cool weather and cool water wear must be readied. We’ll need a camera to capture autumn river splendour. Also,
it’s a great time to rig up an extra reel spool with a sinking or sink-tip line. One thing we won’t likely
need is fly dope.
Fall
Salmon Fishing
Anticipation is what I feel when a new fishing season approaches. I’m thinking of rivers in
Cumberland, Antigonish, Pictou, and Inverness counties, streams dressed in bright fall colours, home to some huge salmon.
Summer flies work well early in the fall, before frosty nights and cold winds lower stream temperatures below 10 degrees C.
A good bet for wet fly fishing in summer
or early fall is the Glitter Bear, also known as the Krystal Bear.
